in the blink of an eye

how did it happen? 27 years passed in what seems like the blink of an eye.
yesterday my son turned 27. i was flooded throughout the day with memories of bygone years...things we did together when he was little. how he's persevered in times of hardship and always always came out on top. how determined he's always been. how he's always gone after exactly what he wants....and gotten it!
and now, as an adult, how he's set goals. how he realizes the importance of family. i recognize that he's doing exactly what he always said he would do. and he's good at it.
he came home this past sunday. we had a family dinner for his birthday. he had gotten off shift at the fire dept that morning but still made it home in time for church. scott, melissa and i sat in the kitchen looking at old photos for a bit...laughing...remembering...sharing stories. he spent time outside with mason and bayly, my daughter's children. bayly is at the age where she's a bit leary of  some people, but she reached for scott and gave him hugs and kisses when he had to leave. such sweetness is now etched in my mind and heart forever.
how did my children get to be so grown in the blink of an eye?
